Feral Cat Surgery Recovery PROCEDURES

1)  Shelter Overnight: Keep the cat sheltered in a trap or carrier the night after surgery. Do not release the cat the same day. Release the following morning only if the cat is alert, clear-eyed, and shows no signs of illness. For pregnant females, extend sheltering by 1-2 additional days.

2)  Safe Environment:

• Keep the cat in a quiet and warm indoor space (e.g., spare room, bathroom, or heated garage).
• Cover the trap with a sheet or towel to minimize stress.
• Check for signs of bleeding, infection, illness, or appetite issues.

3)  Monitor Anesthesia Recovery:

• Expect grogginess and possible disorientation for 4-24 hours. Anesthesia may cause heightened reactions or aggression.
• Avoid handling the cat to prevent stress or injury.

4)  Feeding Guidelines:

• Feed kittens (under four months) small amounts of canned food and water shortly after surgery.
• Do not feed adult cats until 8+ hours post-surgery. Feed cautiously in an enclosed area to avoid escape.

5)  Release and Follow-Up:

• Release the cat at the original trap site once fully recovered.
• Continue to provide fresh food and water daily. Dissolvable sutures require no follow-up visit.

Important Notes:

• Do not open the trap if the cat is aggressive.
• For extended sheltering, ensure access to food and water.
